Coaching philosophy & development
6 sections
Shaun B.'s coaching approach on Yakka Sport is framed around steady rugby union development rather than quick fixes. Sessions typically emphasise clear technical cues, repeatable habits, and feedback athletes can apply in training and match-like settings.
Where appropriate, Shaun B. supports athletes to build confidence through graduated challenges, simplifying tasks when learning new skills, then adding decision-making speed as competence grows.
Skill development in rugby union benefits from deliberate repetition, not mindless volume. Useful sessions connect technique to context, for example, practising a movement and then applying it in a constrained game or scenario that rewards good decisions.
Confidence grows when athletes understand what success looks like. Clear expectations, achievable targets, and honest feedback help participants trust their preparation without comparing themselves to unrealistic benchmarks.
Decision making is trained by presenting realistic choices, when to pass, press, move, or reset, and reviewing outcomes without turning every mistake into a lecture. The aim is sharper reads under pressure over time.
Long-term development prioritises durability: physical readiness, learning habits, and enjoyment of rugby union. Progression should feel sustainable for juniors and developing athletes, not dependent on unsustainable training loads.
Enjoyment matters. Athletes who feel supported and see improvement are more likely to stay involved. Sessions that balance challenge, clarity, and a positive environment tend to produce better outcomes for families and clubs alike.

Private rugby union sessions can be useful when an athlete needs targeted work, for example consolidating a skill before trials, recovering confidence after time away, or addressing a specific technical pattern identified in team training.
